World AIDS Day 2010
Every 77 minutes, somebody in the United Kingdom is diagnosed with HIV.
Over 90,000 people are living with HIV in the United Kingdom and new infections continue every year. World AIDS Day 2010 is all about raising awareness to tackle HIV prejudice and help stop the spread of HIV. Figures released a few days ago (26 November 2010) by the United Kingdom Health Protection Agency estimate that in 2009 the number of people living in the United Kingdom with HIV reached 86,500. Of these, it is thought that around 22,500 are unaware that they are infected with the virus.
Black History Month 2010
Happy Black History Month!
Black History Month is a remembrance and celebration of important events and figures in the history of the African diaspora. Since 1976, it is celebrated annually in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the month of October.
When the tradition of Black History Month began, many in mainstream academia had barely begun to explore the history of various Black peoples. At that point, most representation of people of African descendant in history books only referenced the low social position they held as slaves.
Everything we do in life has been brought about, influenced, changed and channelled by the development and history of Black peoples in our society.
There are many events happening throughout October in order to learn about, celebrate, explore, and enjoy the rich cultures of Africans and other Black people in the UK and beyond. Regardless of your background, consider attending at least one event to participate in this growing movement.
This month, the Upcoming Events section of Mambo will have have special Black History Month events that are happening all over London.
Further information for Black History Month 2010 can be found here for London and for all of the UK.
