If you are a sexually active African - male or female and whatever your sexuality - you should have an HIV test. Here’s why!
Why should I get tested?
If you have HIV, knowing your status means you can access effective treatments to help keep you fit and healthy. You can also take steps to help prevent passing HIV on to your partners.
If you don’t have HIV, knowing your status will give you peace of mind. You can take steps to stay HIV negative (without HIV). But if you don’t test, you won’t know.
What if I’m scared of having an HIV test?
Going for an HIV test can be stressful. But not going for a test won’t change your HIV status – it just means you won’t know what it is. Not knowing is more stressful than going for a test. Once you know your HIV status, you can make informed decisions about your health and your future.
Testing isn’t scary. Testing is free, confidential and quick!
Tests at sexual health clinics are completely confidential. They will not tell your friends, family, employer or anyone else. The result will not be passed to immigration officials and Africans cannot be deported from the UK solely because they have HIV.
If you’re still worried call the African AIDS Helpline on 0800 0967 500 or e-mail HIVtesting@ahpn.org.
