Our young adult years are exciting and challenging times in our lives.  During this time, we make important decisions that might affect our futures, such as whether or not to pursue higher education, which career paths to take, and relationship choices.  We will want to define ourselves as independent persons, but still have healthy relationships and support of our friends and family.

It is important that we build and maintain healthy relationships, as our various inter personal connections are an essential part of living healthily.  Good communication skills, such as a willingness to exchange and listen to thoughts, ideas, and feelings, are very important; as this enables us to understand others and to be understood, as well.

This is particularly important for romantic or sexual relationships.  Sex is a very personal matter, which needs to be approached with responsibility.  Music, films, and television programmes often make sex out to be purely romantic, but that is not the full story.  For example, they often do not tell us about HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), or other areas of sexual health.  Being and staying informed about sex and sexual health will help us to make the good and responsible decisions in our sexual relationships.
